The art of expressing yrf and portraying a character #006

The art of portraying a character, so that viewers can vividly imagine him or her, is a vital skill for any artist. But maybe you have the whole world in the palm of your hand and struggling to bring it over to the screen or paper. You have your character perfectly nailed down but something is off but you don't know what. Or maybe you just don't know where to start?

Well, nobody would believe in a dragon, whose skeleton is from adamantium, his skin acts like stone, he can shoot fire, water, basically controlling all elements, has no weak points etc. It would be too much. Even fantasy needs to work on some realistic baseline. Would be a very short movie in the end 😂. I definitely wouldn't pay for tickets on this one.

Wait, would you?🧐

The living organism

The ability to create a living organism, a believable character is not an easy task. One would say that for a painter it has to be easier than for a writer. Nay, nay. As a painter you have visual tools, as a writer, you have words. What do you do and how do you use your tools is up to you. I mean, sometimes we don't realise how much these two artists are connected...

I think the best way to practice portraying a character is to become the character for a while and live his/her story. The more you will understand your character, the easier you will be able to describe him/her. Also the whole scene, situation, atmosphere and connecting the dots as a whole. It's so cool to be able to become someone else even for a fracture of a minute. And I love it so much, it's like getting a chance to live thousands of lives. Yaay!

I remember I did a similar exercise in some writer's course a long time ago and I know it helped me quite a lot to change the approach in my thinking.

So for today, we will do something very creative and fun. You will have actually two options. I will write down a little bit of of a background story and depending on what you prefer either writing or drawing, you can become someone else :)

sneak peek into the working sheet

Letter to home

Imagine a post-apocalyptic world. Humanity is finally recovering from the worst. You are on a mission with a group of other volunteers. Your parents are luckily still alive and you are just writing them a letter. They do not know what happened to the world or to you.

I will provide working sheets again below in the Dropbox link. You can just fast sketch your character and prepare the letter and it can be a baseline for actual drawing a character as well.

I cannot wait to see what you come up with💜

Once you are done, don't be shy and share it with us below in the comments that we can see all the different ideas and approaches. I will share mine as well :)

And don't forget to have fun!!!
